How to Connect Cloudflare (R2 & Edge CDN) to SmallPict

A 4-step setup guide to provision buckets, configure least-privilege credentials, connect endpoints, and verify edge delivery.

  1. Provision Dedicated Cloudflare R2 Bucket

Create a dedicated bucket or container in your Cloudflare (R2 & Edge CDN) console (Standard storage class recommended).

Tip: Keep the bucket private; public access is not required.

  2. Configure IAM / Scoped Credentials

Generate Cloudflare R2 API Token with least-privilege permissions strictly scoped to read and write objects in your bucket.

Tip: Only PutObject and GetObject permissions are required.

  3. Link Endpoint in SmallPict Dashboard

Enter your bucket name, region, endpoint, and API credentials into the SmallPict BYO settings panel.

Tip: Credentials are encrypted at rest with AES-256 GCM.

  4. Test & Verify Edge Asset Delivery

Upload a test asset or run an automated URL verification. Check response headers for Content-Type: image/avif and CDN cache HIT status.

Tip: Verify Cache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable.

Full Control

Infrastructure Control

You retain complete ownership, access control policies, IAM boundaries, and compliance governance over your assets.

Ready in 5 Mins

Drop-In Integration

Connect seamlessly via WordPress plugin, API, or dashboard. No infrastructure re-architecture, code refactoring, or database schema changes needed.

Security, Privacy & Access Control

Does SmallPict keep or store copies of my files?

Not when you bring your own storage. Images are processed in isolated, encrypted processing storage, and the optimized files are written straight to your Cloudflare R2 bucket. Your files live in your own account: you keep your originals and are responsible for those copies, and SmallPict does not keep a backup of them.

Zero-Storage Retention Model

Least-Privilege IAM

SmallPict requires only bucket-scoped read and write permissions (e.g. PutObject / GetObject). We never request or require administrative, project-wide, or account-wide credentials.

Private Bucket Support

Your Cloudflare R2 buckets do NOT need to be public. SmallPict writes directly using authenticated API calls, and asset delivery is routed securely via CDN Origin Access Control or signed origins.

AES-256 Encryption

All API tokens and credentials stored in SmallPict are encrypted at rest using AES-256 GCM envelope encryption and never logged in plaintext.

Customer Sovereignty

You retain 100% data ownership and sovereignty. You can revoke credentials or rotate keys at any time directly in your Cloudflare (R2 & Edge CDN) console.

  • Full cloud provider egress bandwidth charges
  • Higher LCP latency impacting Google search rankings

With SmallPict + Cloudflare (R2 & Edge CDN)

Lower egress bandwidth bills from your cloud provider

Smaller payloads mean less outbound data transfer, which lowers your cloud provider egress bill every billing cycle.

  • Sub-25ms response time from Cloudflare Global Anycast Edge Network
  • You pay Cloudflare (R2 & Edge CDN) directly at wholesale cloud rates without paying 5x–10x markups to proprietary closed-silo image CDNs.
  • Over 99% CDN edge cache hit ratio

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear technical answers regarding Cloudflare (R2 & Edge CDN) storage integration, CDN cache headers, security policies, and performance.

What is Cloudflare R2 + Cloudflare CDN Integration?

Cloudflare R2 acts as your durable, persistent object repository while Cloudflare CDN serves cached copies from edge points of presence closest to your viewers. SmallPict acts as the high-speed optimization layer in between, automatically compressing images before storage and edge delivery.

Can SmallPict optimize images stored in Cloudflare R2?

Yes. SmallPict connects directly to your Cloudflare R2 buckets. It compresses JPEG, PNG, and WebP assets, converts them into next-generation AVIF and WebP formats, and stores the optimized files directly inside your bucket.

Does SmallPict work with Cloudflare CDN?

Yes. When SmallPict streams optimized images to Cloudflare R2, it attaches optimal HTTP caching headers (Cache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable). Cloudflare CDN caches these assets at the edge, serving requests with sub-25ms response times.

Can I use a private Cloudflare R2 bucket?

Absolutely. SmallPict does NOT require your bucket to be public. SmallPict writes directly using authenticated API calls, and public delivery is handled securely via CDN Origin Access Control or private origin configurations.

Does SmallPict require Cloudflare (R2 & Edge CDN) administrative credentials?

No. SmallPict operates on least-privilege principles and only requires credentials (Cloudflare R2 API Token) with scoped permissions strictly restricted to reading and writing objects within your specific target bucket.

Can I use a multi-region Cloudflare R2 bucket?

Yes. SmallPict fully supports multi-region, dual-region, and regional bucket configurations. SmallPict will push optimized assets to whichever endpoint you configure in your SmallPict dashboard.

Does SmallPict alter or overwrite my original images?

By default, SmallPict generates modern optimized formats (.avif and .webp) alongside your original master files, preserving your original images untouched unless you explicitly configure in-place replacement.

Where are optimized images stored?

All optimized images are stored directly in your own Cloudflare R2 bucket, in your own account. With BYO storage you keep your originals and are responsible for those copies; SmallPict does not keep a backup of them.

Does SmallPict support WebP and AVIF formats?

Yes. SmallPict natively encodes both AVIF and WebP, which are typically much smaller than JPEG. When delivered through Cloudflare CDN, assets are served dynamically according to the visitor's browser support.

How does caching work after image optimization?

SmallPict injects Cache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable headers into every stored asset. This informs Cloudflare CDN edge nodes and client browsers to cache the image for up to one year, maximizing cache hit ratios (>99%) and virtually eliminating origin transfer fees.

Zero Egress Shock, Full Infrastructure Control

Deploy SmallPict with Cloudflare (R2 & Edge CDN). Keep your media assets inside your own cloud account while enjoying automated AVIF/WebP encoding and global edge acceleration.
